ORLANDO, Fla. – The Otterbein women's tennis team closed its spring break trip with a solid 4-1 record late Friday night, overcoming scheduling changes and mother nature throughout the trip to remain productive.
The Cardinals, now 9-3 overall since the beginning of the school year, followed up the strong start with victories over Ursinus and Aquinas College. Sandwiched between there was a narrow 5-4 loss to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
URSINUS HIGHLIGHTS (W 8-1):
Otterbein dominated the doubles portion and never looked back, as the Bears only point came at fourth singles.
Rachelle Moses had the biggest challenge for her victory in the fifth spot before emerging by counts of 6-3, 2-6 and 11-9 in the breaker.
Lillia Walter had a workmanlike 6-3, 6-4 effort in the second position while all other Cardinals breezed past opponents with relative ease.
RIP HIGHLIGHTS (L 5-4):
After Tuesday's nightcap against Covenant was canceled, the Cards ultimately stepped back into action with a pair of Friday matches to close their stay…
That began against RIP, which held a 2-1 lead after some very competitive moments in doubles.
Erin Storrer and
Emma Henson snagged the Cards' first point at the top spot, winning 8-6.
Otterbein then earned victories on singles courts 1-3-6 courtesy of Storrer, Henson and
Cassady Shough. Henson had the biggest thriller… dropping the first set 1-6 before storming back to win 6-2, and then control the breaker by a 10-5 margin.
Unfortunately, the Engineers grabbed W's at the 2, 4 and 5 positions to hold off the Cards in a back-and-forth affair.
AQUINAS HIGHLIGHTS (W 5-2):
Action moved over to Sanlando Park for the nightcap, where the Cardinals earned a strong (5-2) victory over the Division II Saints. Otterbein won all three doubles courts fairly comfortably to earn one team point, as is the format under D2 rules…
It wouldn't end up mattering much in singles action regardless, where Otterbein received triumphs from Storrer (6-2, 6-0), Walter (6-3, 6-1) and Shough (6-0, 6-0) in straight sets.
Madi Mueller got into the fun with a lengthier battle… prevailing on counts of 6-2, 4-6 and 10-6 in the tiebreaker.
Storrer finished the trip a perfect/combined 8-0, and now stands 9-1 in dual action this season.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Otterbein ill enjoy a full week off, traveling back up north this weekend and resuming action next Saturday morning at Wittenberg. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
