FINAL RESULTS
ATLANTA, Ga. – The 2021-22 Otterbein Women's Tennis team secured another piece of history Friday afternoon, winning the program's first-ever match in the NCAA Division III Championships by taking down Webster.
The Cardinals, besting the Gorlocks 5-0, up their overall record to 19-4 this year and advance to Saturday's NCAA second round on the campus of Emory University. Otterbein will now face a stiff challenge against No. 10-ranked Sewanee.
"This is a huge and historic day for our program," head coach
Tyler Stephen said. "We knew this was a hurdle that hadn't been overcome in tennis on the women's side. But given a big stage, they handled themselves with the same poise they had all year..."
The doubles portion would be all in favor of the Cards, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead after comfortably sweeping all courts.
Erin Storrer/
Emma Henson and
Lillia Walter/
Madi Mueller both won 8-2, while the tandem of
Rachelle Moses and
Aubrey McMahon prevailed 8-3 on the line below.
Otterbein stayed on the gas pedal and jumped all over Webster to launch singles. Storrer, Walter, Henson, Moses and
Cassady Shough all won their opening sets 6-0 while Mueller was almost perfect in a 6-1 triumph.
Henson and Walter opened 3-0 leads in their second frames before you could blink, and both cruised to another shutout while clinching the day. All other Cardinals were leading on their courts as well.
"I think we are proud, but also ready to take on the challenge of a top team in the country," Stephen added. "We will rest up and be excited for the opportunity tomorrow."
First serve against Sewanee is scheduled for 2 p.m. Host Emory will take on Piedmont in the morning semifinal.
