ATLANTA, Ga. – A magical season for the Otterbein Women's Tennis team rested Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championships, as the Cardinals were eliminated by No. 10-ranked Sewanee at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

Otterbein dropped a 5-0 decision, falling behind after a tough doubles section but competing admirably as the singles matchup unfolded. The Cards end with a 19-5 overall mark after claiming the program's first-ever NCAA victory to open the tournament against Webster.

The 19 victories (against arguably the toughest schedule in program history) fall one shy of a matching a single-season record. The 2013-14 squad played its way to a 20-3 season… the last time the program was in the national bracket.

A stiff test was in order against Sewanee, a powerhouse program that was in the NCAA Quarterfinals last spring and now currently stands 21-3 this time around (8-1 against regionally-ranked teams). The Tigers feature roughly 25 players on their official roster.

Erin Storrer and Emma Henson were the closest to victory at first doubles, but fell by an 8-3 margin against the tandem of Alice Hall and Brooke Despriet.

Lillia Walter/Madi Mueller had a tall order on the No. 2 line vs. Ansley Carpenter and Natalia Nassar, who entered holding a 19-1 overall mark and 17-0 in dual competition. Rachelle Moses and Julia Gillin also fell victim at third doubles.

The Cardinals shrugged off the 3-0 deficit as best they could to begin singles play, battling through some long exchanges before Sewanee tallied clinching points at the No. 5 and 6 courts.

Storrer (1) and Walter (2) narrowly lost their opening sets 6-4, while Henson trailed just 4-3 in a tight second set before it went "unfinished."

Sewanee advances to a big Sweet 16 showdown against host Emory come Sunday at noon.

Otterbein sends off Mueller and Moses in style after the senior duo helped the program go a combined 53-13 since arrival. Two of those seasons were unfortunately shortened in the midst of the pandemic.

The Cardinals aren't quite done for the season, however, as Storrer will head to Orlando and compete in the NCAA singles bracket come May 27-29 at USTA National Campus. More on that in the weeks ahead!
