CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cardinals split a pair of matches on the women's tennis scene in the Cleveland area over the weekend, starting with a near shutout at Oberlin before succumbing in a matchup with nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve.
Otterbein now stands 4-2 in non-conference action so far this season as it shifts focus toward a couple matches over spring break in Indiana.
OBERLIN RECAP (W 8-1):
The Cardinals swept all three doubles courts and never looked back, with the top tandem of
Erin Storrer and
Lillia Walter joining forces again for another key showdown. They bested Anna Pastore and Lydia Zafeiri by an 8-5 final.
Aubrey McMahon and Olivia Eckles prevailed more comfortably (8-1) on the middle line, while
Julia Gillin and
Rachelle Moses did more of the same with a shutout at third doubles.
Otterbein then took five of six courts during the individual pairings, and nearly made it a clean day before Moses unfortunately dropped a 10-5 tiebreaker after trading a pair of tight sets to begin.
Storrer took down Pastore (hey, that rhymed) by way of 6-2, 6-4 counts and Walter led her first set 6-5 before the opponent retired.
Cassady Shough, Eckles and
Taryn Simmers all prevailed in straight sets with relative ease moving down the lineup.
CASE WESTERN RESERVE RECAP (L 9-0):
After spending the night in downtown Cleveland, the group headed over to Mayfield Village Racquet Club for a tough test against the No. 17-ranked Spartans.
Storrer and Walter battled on the top doubles line against vs. the powerhouse duo of Hannah Kassaie/Lily McCloskey, manufacturing some quality moments before resting just short at 8-5. Case cleaned up on the other two courts…
Storrer went the distance in both sets against McCloskey at No. 1 singles as well but unfortunately dropped both, 7-5 and 7-5.
Eckels nearly earned a point for the Cardinals on the fifth court, opening with a gritty 7-6 triumph in the first set after shutting her opponent out (7-0) in the breaker. However, Ellior Rose responded to for a 6-2 equalizer and then also took the tiebreak.
NEXT UP:
Otterbein will travel to play Franklin College (3/5) and Anderson University (3/6) on consecutive days in The Hoosier State over spring break.
