Box Score WOOSTER, Ohio – The Otterbein University women's tennis team wrapped up two full days of competition at the Wooster Invitational, collecting a variety of victories in both doubles and singles play.
Day One:
The Cardinals started strong in Saturday's doubles rounds. Junior Caitlin Pennington and sophomore Niya Bell opened with a 6-2 victory over Elyse Errington and Lauren Richmond of Wooster, while junior Taryn Simmers and freshman Raina Smith edged Maria Lounder and Adriana Navarro of Allegheny, 6-4. Simmers later paired with freshman Molly Jones to sweep Wooster's Jade Adkins and Kamila Kadirova, 6-0. Sophomore Daniela De Mata and junior Breanna Ball added a 6-4 triumph over Wooster's Elizabeth Meiners and Sasha Riley in the third round.
Otterbein carried that momentum into singles, where seven players secured victories. De Mata began with an 8-3 win over Scarlett Kingston of Oberlin. Simmers dominated her first two opponents, defeating Oberlin's Olivia Wollner (8-1) and Wooster's Lauren Richmond (8-2). Bell came away with a pair of gritty wins, 8-7 (4) over Oberlin's Hannah Soong and 8-4 against Wooster's Elyse Errington. Jones impressed with back-to-back commanding results, blanking Oberlin's Robyn Gurujal (8-0) before handling Wooster's Willow Hernishin (8-1). Pennington and Smith also contributed singles wins, defeating Wooster's Jade Adkins (8-7, 4) and Oberlin's Gabby Kirsch (8-3), respectively. In the second round, Ball battled to an 8-7 (3) decision against Wooster's Sasha Riley.
Day Two:
Sunday brought more doubles success. De Mata and Ball went unbeaten, earning wins of 6-4 over Allegheny's Maria Lounder/Adriana Navarro and 6-3 against Giada Palmieri/Rei Etsumi. Pennington and Bell also rolled past Wooster's Jade Adkins/Kamila Kadirova, 6-0, while Simmers and Smith swept their matches with a 6-0 victory against Wooster's Willow Hernishin/Jaden Newman and a 6-1 result over Wooster's Lauren Richmond/Elyse Errington.
In singles play, the Cardinals were unable to come away with a victory, but De Mata nearly broke through in a hard-fought marathon against Allegheny's Gabby Bassette before falling 5-7, 7-6 (3), 14-12.
